ANCILLARY ITEMS

‘Ancillary’ is an interesting word used in several ways and for a host of purposes. Other words that are used to cover a range of items that we are not quite sure how to describe as a collective are various, miscellaneous, assortment, selection and others.

It is the word that is often used to describe something that is in a position of secondary importance but vital to the ability of being able to complete a process or service.

When using a vacuum or mechanical press to mount a print it is important to use either a clear release film or release paper. Three types are available the clear release film which is a double sided siliconised polyester film. Double sided release paper which as it suggests is also siliconised both sides and then there is the standard single sided silicone release paper available.

Release film or the release paper can be classed as a true ancillary item as it is very important to use one of them during the mounting process to avoid getting surplus adhesive on the mounting machine’s platen.

Other ancillary or complimentary items used whilst over-laminating a print is a foam plastic sheet used during the laminating process. The foam plastic protects the laminate from direct contact with the press platen during laminating process giving an even overall surface to the film.

A piercing tool used to perforate the film, if not already supplied as pre-pierced is classed as an ancillary item. Plus the well named tacking iron used to secure and position a print in place prior to placing the artwork in the press, is always listed as an ancillary item.

Another important complementary item often listed as an ancillary item is the de-roller. With prints arriving often rolled in tubes the de-roller is an excellent and safe way of getting your print flat again.

‘Ancillary’ is a word that is not always recognised as describing vital additions to the process of mounting and laminating. It would be impossible however to complete the process if several of them were not used.
